October 20, 2010 - GRPC's Sustainable Communities Plan receives a HUD grant. The Gulf Regional Planning Commission, in consortium with the GCCDS and others, has received a $2 million grant from HUD's Sustainable Communities Regional Planning Grant Program. The joint proposal involves all MS coastal cities and counties in a three-year initiative. Read more in the GCCDS' press release.

September 15, 2010 - First Public Design Intern begins at the GCCDS. Ceara O'Leary, GCCDS' inaugural Public Design Intern, has officially started the year-long program and is working in the Design Studio while taking classes. More interns will be added each semester. August 27, 2010 - GCCDS Mapping featured on NPR. A GCCDS map showing recovery and unmet needs along the Gulf Coast was featured in an August 23rd story on Biloxi’s recovery from Hurricane Katrina on NPR’s “All Things Considered." Listen to the story and see the map here.

December 2009 - The December education issue of Architecture lists Mississippi State University School of Architecture as one of three national schools leading in community design, in part because of the work of the GCCDS. Link to their website here.

November 10, 2009. Community meeting in Soria City, Gulfport. GCCDS helps host a community meeting in the Soria City neighborhood of Gulfport, exploring potential planning strategies.

October 7, 2009. Ground breaking for the Bethel Estates Development. This project has been a collaboration between Back Bay Mission, Alembic Development and GCCDS.

August 29, 2009. Dedication of the Trace Neighborhood. The dedication speech was given by Governor Barbour. The Trace has been a project between Habitat for Humanity Mississippi Gulf Coast and GCCDS. See more here.

July 22, 2009. Alternative Construction Research Guide presented to the Renaissance Guild. The guide on alternative building systems is the summary of research conducted under funding from the Small Business Administration. Read more here.

June 29, 2009. Rose Fellow Seth Welty is certified as LEED AP. The GCCDS' resident Rose Fellow is the studio's first LEED AP.

GCCDS awarded a research grant by SERRI and the Department of Homeland Security to work with the Oak Ridge National Laboratory to develop commercial waterproof construction techniques.

September 24, 2008. GCCDS releases new maps and figures on Katrina Recovery in East Biloxi. The GCCDS has completed its third annual assessment of housing in East Biloxi, releasing new maps and figures showing the steady pace of redevelopment in the community. See the maps here.

August 28, 2008. GCCDS and AIA Gulf Coast host luncheon. In partnership with the AIA Gulf Coast, GCCDS held a luncheon presentation session on the work of the studio, and invited area firms to participate in the recovery efforts.


May 27, 2008. GCCDS hosts community meeting. The GCCDS will host an open house at the Salvation Army tent from 5-7 pm, to solicit feedback on the work completed this semester by by students from MSU and MIT.  All are invited to attend. April 14, 2008. GCCDS and the Institute for Sustainable Communities announce summer fellowship. The program will be a ten-week summer internship addressing community planning and design on the Gulf Coast. Click here for more information. Applications are due Thursday, May 1.


April 11, 2008.  GCCDS Open House for Mississippi Architecture Week. Several GCCDS houses will be open to the public today between 3:00 and 5:00 PM. Maps are available at the office in Biloxi, or here. All are invited to a reception and exhibit at the Hope Coordination Center at 5:00.

January 27, 2008.  MIT urban planning students visit Biloxi.   Kicking off the collaboration between the Biloxi spring studio and MIT's Department of Urban Studies and Planning, the two groups spent the week conducting site analysis and making preliminary proposals. Read more at the studio blog.


January 1, 2008.  GCCDS opens its second location!  Working in partnership with the Hancock Housing Resource Center, GCCDS has opened a branch studio in Bay St. Louis, to better serve clients in Hancock County.


November 7, 2007. Blitz Build Two is underway! Building on the success of the first Blitz Build, the EBCRRA, GCCDS, and various volunteer groups have kicked off a framing blitz in East Biloxi.


October 17 & 19, 2007. James Wheeler gives two talks in Minneapolis, MN, entitled Design Down River: The Gulf Coast Community Design Studio. October 17th, James will speak at the University of Minnesota College of Design, and the 19th at Twin Cities Solution, Volume 2.


October 3, 2007. Blitz Build House is Dedicated! Completed on schedule, in only two weeks, the Blitz Build House is finished and occupied.

September 19, 2007. Blitz Build 2007 Is Underway.
GCCDS, EBCRRA, Hope Force and Hands On join forces to build a house in only two weeks! This effort will be a model for stream-lining future construction projects.

August 13, 2007. GIS professionals donate time, materials to GCCDS.  GIS Corps, which brings GIS professionals to areas that require humanitarian relief or community development, is sending David Allen of Euless, Texas with GCCDS for a 4-day training in the use of GIS mapping software.  In preparation for this event, David has worked with ESRI and South Central Arc User Group, both of whom have made generous donations of GIS training manuals to GCCDS.


June 11, 2007. A Summer Design/Build Studio is underway in East Biloxi. The Studio, under the direction of Brian Bell, Brad Guy, and Sergio Palleroni, has begun work on an elevated home for one of our East Biloxi residents.


June 4, 2007. Bill Stallworth, Director of the East Biloxi Coordination and Relief Center, presented the work of the Center and the GCCDS to architects, community designers, and planners at the Great Gumbo/Association for Community Design (ACD) Conference in Baton Rouge.
