Safety Tips
Safety First!
- Do not try to collect something that appears hazardous, that you are uncomfortable handling, or which is to heavy for you to easily carry. We will have other people to help with those items.
- Stay away from any drums or five-gallon buckets. Report their location to the cleanup staff
- Wear gloves to collect the debris.
- Be careful of glass, syringes, or other sharp objects.
Frequently Asked Questions
This FAQ is modified from one maintained by the Mississippi Coastal Cleanup program. If you have a question that isn't addressed here, please send it to snaughton@gccds.msstate.edu
Q: How will you inform volunteers of any changes to the event?
A: Visit www.gccds.org/bayoucleanup for the most up-to-date information. We will also send e-mails with any major changes to all registered volunteers.
Q: Will food be provided to volunteers?
A: Water will be available for volunteers at the start of the morning and we will provide light snacks for everyone once the cleanup is finished.
Q: What supplies do I need to bring?
A: Volunteers should bring the following items:
- clothes that you don’t mind getting dirty;
- sunscreen and a hat to protect yourself from the sun;
- insect repellent;
- close-toed shoes, boots, or sneakers to protect your feet;
- We will have protective gloves on site, but please feel free to bring your own work or kitchen gloves if you own a pair;
- Trash bags will be provided;
- If you would like, bring a camera to take pictures of the morning.
Q: Where do I report to sign in?
A: All volunteers will start the morning by gathering at our tent at
Braun and Bradford Streets
in East Biloxi (note that Google marks Bradford Street as Olivia Morris Drive).
Q: Where should volunteers park?
A: Volunteers will be able to park along Bradford Street and other streets nearby, but we encourage car-pooling and arriving early to ensure closer parking. Please be courteous and do not block driveways; we’ll be working in a residential neighborhood.
Q: What if we find something too large to move or that won't fit into a bag?
A: First, remember to practice basic safety. Don't try to move something that is too heavy for you to lift comfortably, and do not try to move dangerous objects (such as a metal drum leaking an unknown substance). Inform clean up staff where you found the item and they will arrange for its disposal later. We are working with our partners to arrange a day when professionals can come remove large objects with the help of equipment.
Q: What do I do if I find a stranded or entangled animal?
A: This is not likely to happen on Bayou Auguste, but if it does, notify cleanup staff immediately if you see any stranded, injured or entangled animals. Do not attempt to aid the animal yourself! This could result in injury to you or the animal.
Q: What do I do if I find hazardous waste?
A: Stay away from large 50-gallon drums or five-gallon buckets. Report their location to the cleanup staff. Do not touch any hazardous waste, and notify cleanup staff if you find items such as: car batteries, tires, syringes and needles, medical waste, and full bottles of disinfectant, chlorine bleach, household cleaners, herbicides and insecticides, motor oil.
